Granola Bars – Easy & Cheap

I was looking for an alternate to buying commercial granola bars, they are just too expensive. Also the store bought ones don’t seem to satisfy me, usually are too dry and often have too much sodium.

So I searched and experimented. Finally I came across this recipe which makes great granola bars.

Chewy Granola Bars

Chewy Granola Bars

4.5 cups (sometimes I only use 3.5) rolled oats (don’t use the quick ones or the instant ones, I did and they do not stick together)
1 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla
2/3 cup butter softened, I use margarine
1/2 cup honey
1/3 cup packed brown sugar

from here on the ingredients are your choice:
I use pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, cranberries, raisins but you can use what you wish. I add about a cup or so of each.

Now comes the hard part, mixing thoroughly. I mix things as I go along it seems to get it all mixed more thoroughly.

Put it all into a 9×13 baking pan, which you have lightly greased.

Bake at 325 for 25 or so minutes, I do it until they are lightly browned on the top, with the emphasis on lightly.

Cut the bars into sections while hot but do not remove from the pan. Wait until thoroughly cool, then remove from pan.

Enjoy.
